THE PSYCHIC IMPRINT, THE PSYCHIC SCREAM

This oft discussed, and fairly likely, explanation of hauntings suggests that buildings and natural surroundings may absorb psychic energy given off by its inhabitants, especially during times of distress. This energy, having a long half-life, resides for many years, even centuries, to be picked up by those sensitive to such energies. The recipient then subconsciously interprets the residue into auditory, visual or physical form. (This theory has been compared to a physic motion picture of the past. Another comparison might be made to sitting down in a chair and feeling the warmth of the person who sat in it five minutes earlier: the person is gone, but their energy {heat} remains.) This theory might explain why hauntings are usually location specific.

My own twist on this is the psychic scream, which might help to explain other phenomena as well. As in the first, I propose that when we are in trouble, we emit powerful psychic messages. Yes, these distress calls might be absorbed by the environment, or maybe they even travel through time, being received by someone years later (or earlier!) We’ve all heard stories of people who instinctively knew a loved one was in a car accident or who perhaps even saw them in some unlikely place at the time of the event. I think it’s probably safe, even for the skeptic, to assume that some sort of psychic energy exists. And if so, this energy may well explain hauntings, divine knowledge, and possibly premonitions.

FAITH MANIFESTATION

The term is my own, I think, but I can't begin to take credit for the theory. What I propose is: belief bends reality. Oops, did I just get metaphysical? Not intentionally. For all I know, this effect may be purely psychological or cultural. What do you know of reality, anyhow, but by your own perception? Therefore, if your perception can be altered by your state of mind, then so can reality, at least as you know it. This effect, whether real or imagined, is compounded when large groups of people carry the same belief. (Witches and demon possession were very real to the people of Salem— real enough to kill over. And a little over a hundred years ago, slavery was widely accepted by otherwise intelligent people.)

I propose that if I could convince enough people that my ballpoint pen was magical and had strange healing powers, eventually evidence would arise suggesting that it was true. Researchers would be stunned by uncanny personal testimonials and would find odd magnetic fields around my pen. The Discovery Channel would do an entire show dedicated to the startling facts behind William’s magic pen.

This type of phenomenon might go a long way toward explaining UFO’s, bigfoot, the Loch Ness monster, faith healing, bleeding statues, and yes, ghosts. Let’s face it, they can’t all exist, can they?

Footnote: encounters with aliens have been charted to find a not-so-startling evolution. Aliens were once described by witnesses as human-like, then they became "little green men" and only recently evolved into "greys." Though this fact may be disheartening to believers, it does suggest a kind of mass-consciousness created perhaps by the media.
